… it wasn’t until the 1960’s that our first nectars came about, and this was when Compal became a part of the largest Portuguese economic consortium at the time: CUF (Companhia União Fabril) and we were able to build our first factory in Almeirim. It was 1964. We started to diversify our flavours and launched Orange, and the mythical Apricot and Pera Rocha pear.
In the 1970’s, years of great turmoil and economic upheaval in Portugal, Compal was nationalized, which led to a slowdown in its growth. These were not easy years… In the 1980’s we set up the first Tetra Pak filling line, which made us more modern and brought convenience and innovation, traits our consumers still acknowledge to this day. In these years, the State held Compal in a sub-holding called Nutrinveste so the company could be better prepared for its relaunch.
In the 1990’s, Compal was market leader in the segments that are most relevant for us. With Nutrinveste’s privatization and a return to the known shareholders, under the Mello family’s orbit, the company’s management gained a new vision and dynamism that turned it into what it is today.
